Linda Grace Gemmell ~ Landscape Artist
Born in 1963 and brought up in Renfrewshire, Linda initially trained in pattern and design technology and was employed by Glasgow Museums to research historical garments and subsequently design patterns for their reproduction. After several years working in pattern design, she returned to full-time education in 1988, obtaining B.A.(Hons) & a post-graduate qualification before taking up employment in Ayrshire. In 2000, she left her work to paint full-time and now works from her studio at her home in Rhu, Argyll & Bute.
Linda has travelled widely throughout Scotland and her interests include Scotland’s history, culture, landscape, and geography - especially that of the west coast and the Highlands and Islands. Linda’s paintings are mainly landscape, with her inspiration for most of her paintings coming from the beauty of this small part of the world.
Her love of Spain and travels to the Spanish Pyrenees, Catalonia and Andalusia also provides her with constant inspiration, in particular, the cloudless, brilliant blue skies and “pueblos blancos” – the white mountain villages of the Alpujarra of Andalusia. Linda paints in both watercolour and increasingly, in acrylic. She enjoys working with the texture and vibrancy that this medium offers and feels that this lends itself well to the strong, brilliant colours of the Mediterranean in particular.
